Rear Windshield Leak Fixing Method

Rear windshield leak can be very annoying and if it is not taken care immediately the interior of the car can get damaged during rainstorms and soaked. Even small rain can produce mildew smell and water spots on the car’s upholstery. Hence it is very necessary to fix the leak around the rear windshield as soon as it is seen before it gets worse.

To fix the leak around the rear windshield first it should be spotted properly. Garden hose or jug filled with water can be used for pouring water on top of the rear windshield. Let the water run down and see where the leak spot is. This can be best determined by sitting inside the car when the water is poured on the rear windshield. A screwdriver can be used for prying the rubber trim of the window gently away from the rear windshield near the leak source. One should be careful enough so that they do not nick or bend it. The channel should be checked for any rust or cracks, the same way the windshield glass’s bottom should be checked for cracks or nicks or chips.

Cotton rag can be dipped in rubbing alcohol to wipe the channel so that the person repairing the rear windshield leak gets a smooth surface for working. Sandpaper can also be used for rubbing off rust if any on the surface. With the help of a caulking gun, polyurethane sealant can be applied on the channel. Care should be taken to leave one eighth of an inch above the channel top for accommodating the trim. The trim should be replaced before the caulk gets dry. With the help of the duct tape it can be secured well in its place. After the caulk dries in about thirty minutes time the duct tape can be removed and checked again for any leak.
