Motorcycle Windshields – Key Points for the Right Selection

Windshields can be added to any type of motorcycle but are very common on touring motorcycles. Motorcycle windshields are useful in a number of ways. The greatest advantage of using a motorcycle windshield is, it offers better aerodynamics and blocks the wind and bugs and other flying objects that may hit the face, while driving the motorcycle.

While deciding to use a motorcycle windshield, it should be noticed whether the height of the windshield is accurate. If the height of the windshield is short, it may not serve the purpose of deflecting the wind, bugs, flying objects and debris. On the other hand, if they are too tall, it can hinder the vision of the driver and the dirt on the windshield can cause a blur in the vision. So, in both the cases, the windshields just do the opposite of what they are supposed to do, that is, improve the visibility condition of the driver.

Additionally, if the top of the motorcycle windshield is in the line of sight of the driver, it would cause him to bend down his head a little or stretch above the windshield. In both the situations, the driver experiences physical pain, in order to get a clear view of the road ahead. This may, in the worst situation, lead to accidents and windshields are not intended to ultimately result in accidents.

Another important factor is the tint of the motorcycle shield. A dark tint affects the vision of the driver in low light and during night driving, as also during fog and smog. This is very dangerous for the driver and for others, too. In contrast, if the tint of the motorcycle shield is too light, the glare would hit the windshield at right angles and blind the driver’s vision. This may cause injury and more serious accidents.

Also, the material of the motorcycle windshield should be shatter- proof, and if it is otherwise, one small hit from a flying object is enough to break it into pieces. If this happens, it would affect the concentration of the driver while driving, which would lead to many more chain reactions of accidents. Keeping this in mind, some of the states have made it compulsory that motorcycle windshields should be shatter proof.

But the overall advantage of having a motorcycles windshield is that it allows the air to flow evenly up and over the motorcycle, which offers more gas mileage and any amount saved in gas is an advantage.
