Windshield Replacement Basics

Windshield is the most susceptible part of a car and is more prone to damage, even when there is no one inside the vehicle. Though a windshield is structurally designed to absorb the impact and withhold airbag pressure in head on collisions, there are situations when windshields get damaged and need to be replaced.

One of the benefits of having auto glass insurance is that windshield replacement is covered under the insurance benefits and the owner of the car need to pay only the deductible, instead of paying for the entire price of the windshield.

Replacing a windshield is no longer a tedious process, thanks to the auto glass repair shops that have sprung up all over. It takes less than an hour or two to fix the problem and there are mobile replacement options, too, so that the repairers come to the spot specified to replace the windshield.

There are certain aspects to look into while replacing a windshield. Primarily, the materials that are used have to be checked thoroughly. A glass that has a good brand name and a two- part urethane that holds the glass to the car body have to be of high quality. The bottom material called the cowling should also be removed to ensure a proper adhesion at the base of the windshield.

The windshield should be placed on a rack or saddle and not on any unstable surface. It is better, if the technicians wear new gloves or use suction cup handles, to avoid getting hand oil on the glass. Of course, the windshield has the chance of developing broken edges during shipping and this has to be doubly checked before it is positioned.

Along with the windshield, it is better to replace the wiper blades also, as old wiper blades would cause damage to the new windshield. Sufficient time, usually an hour or two, should be given for the urethane to harden and adhere quickly between the windshield and the body of the car.

It is good to ensure from the technicians, when it is safe to drive the vehicle because, if used before the said time, irregular weak spots will be created in the windshield that would result in susceptibility to future damage. A warranty can be asked for both the glass and the labor. With auto insurance policy, the damaged windshield can be replaced with a factory windshield.
